What Is a Guest Post and What Does It Do for SEO?

Everything you need to know about guest posts

So you’ve asked yourself “what is a guest post and what does it do for SEO”; and that’s good because it means you’re ready to take the next step to improving your site’s online presence. So for the following lesson, we will assume that you have a website and are usually the person that publishes the content to it. Now to the juice.

So what is a guest post

A guest post is a blog entry that is written by you (the guest author) for someone else’s website, with the sole intention of placing a link on that person’s website to link back to yours. A guest post is one of the most commonly used strategies to help build backlinks. Usually the publisher / website owner will charge a small fee to let you publish a guest post on their blog, but if the content is good enough and you pitch your post well, you might be able to get away with your posting your sponsored content for free.

Some important things about guest posts

Although we mentioned that guest posts are written by you for someone else’s site, the name has been co-opted by websites that sell services that will write an article for you to link back to your site on their web properties, as well as to pitch to other blogs to publish. Usually there is nothing wrong with this, but you have to be careful when approaching guest posts.

Do your research about where you’re publishing a guest post

The tricky thing about link building with guest posts is that you have to make sure you’re getting your posts published to the right blogs. You want to make sure that either you, or the SEO company you’ve hired are getting your articles published on the right types of websites. This means that the blogs that you’re publishing your guest posts to are in the same field as your site’s content. As an example, say you’re website sells mouse pads, the kind of websites you’d want to focus on getting your posts published would be things in the same field, like computer and video game blogs. If you get your post published on a blog that most does skin care reviews, Google will read that see that it doesn’t make sense; and that might raise a flag.

So how do I get a guest post

There are three main ways to go about getting a guest post. The first way is to find blogs that publish content in your field. The you can just send them a quick email which you can usually find in their contact form and ask them if they’ll publish your content.

This second way can be frowned if done incorrectly. All you need to do here is just Google the phrase guest posts and there will be a bunch of results of sites that will post your content for a moderate fee. These sites can be a little sketchy though, and you want to make sure that they either haven’t been blacklisted by Google, or that they’re in a relevant field. Again, if you’re selling furniture, you don’t want to be posting on a music blog (unless your furniture company makes studio desks or guitar stands).

The third way is probably the most effective, but also the most costly, and that’s to hire to an SEO agency to handle the work for you. They’ll write posts that are designed to rank organically as well as reach out to blogs for you to publish the content. Here at Okay Company we manage our own blogs in a variety of niches to make guest posting just a little bit easier. We write all of the content for these blogs and guest posts are selected based on the merit of the original domain.

Always do your research before guest posting

Like we said about Googling guest posts, you should always do the same and research an SEO company before you decide to hire one. Make sure you pick an established agency that is dedicated to the SEO community, and not just one that says they’re a Google partner.
